No. 31 was built in 1901 by The Midland Railway Wagon & Carriage Co. as an open topped four wheeled car. It was lengthened and fitted with a new underframe by Blackpool in 1918 and was mounted on two equal wheel bogies.
It became engineering car No.4 in 1934 where it was used for many years until it was transferred to Beamish in July 1984 where it was restored to its present condition
The model was made from a modified Dreadnaught lower deck and a Tower SHMD upper deck and is fitted with an Alan Kirkman HT1 Halling based chassis which has one powered and one trailing bogie.
