The Annfield Plain Co-operative Society was formed in 1870 using rented premises, building their own began in 1873 and opened only one year later in 1874. It was a huge building which closed in 1980 and only part was dismantled and re-erected at Beamish where it was amongst the first buildings to be opened to the public in 1984.
